Fun in the Mud

U10

Coming off a bye, the Swift Parrots didn’t let the home-ground mud cramp their style against the much-improved Colts from Strathfieldsaye.

The visitors opened the scoringAidan_Goddard and led again at 2-1, but the Swifties had time and fresh legs on their side.

After leading 3-2 at half-time, the Swifties ran into space and found their aim in the second half, eventually winning 10-3.

(Muddiest) Swiftie of the Match: Aidan Goddard. Goals to Monte (3), Dimitri (2), Silas (2), Finn, Louis and Ciaran

U12A

The first home match for quite a while greeted CGFC U12A, with the return of our regular goalkeeper an added bonus.

The first half had enough action for both halves, with the lead being taken early by Eaglehawk. Some determined defending and a few counter attacks kept the scores at 0-1 until halfway through the first half when Castlemaine equalised. 1-1
A quick response from Eaglehawk put them in front again 1-2.
Castlemaine responded quickly, a little too quickly as their goal was rightly ruled off-side. But within a minute they had the ball in the back of the net to level it up 2-2.
Castlemaine took the lead shortly afterwards 2-3, but Eaglehawk countered immediately to bring the first half to a close with scores locked at 3-3.
Castlemaine pressed hard from the start of the second half, exhibiting renewed self belief. With many forays in to the Eaglehawk half thwarted only by a very skilled goalkeeper.
However the second half was dominated by determined counter attacks from Eaglehawk, who managed to overcome the heavy ground conditions and put a further 5 goals past Castlemaine bringing the final score to 3-8.

U14A

Colds and flu severely impacted on player availability when Castlemaine ventured to Shadforth Park to take on Giolden City and even six of the eleven players that Castlemaine was eventually able to field were unwell. It is testament to the great resilience of the team that they completed an emphatic 6-0 win and finished top of the table in Pool 1 of the League Cup.

Castlemaine dominated the opening ten minutes and with great patience were able to break down some gritty Golden City defence to score two goals in quick succession.

Given concerns about the ability of those suffering illness to run out the full game, and with no bench to draw on, the team slowed the tempo of the game.

Eli Rogers was dominant in the centre of the park. Having already scored from a stunning lob he outdid himself with a box-to-box run and goal towards the end of the first half. That Castlemaine were able to go into the break 4-0 was the result of a magnificent diving save from goalkeeper Yau-Ka Lam in the dying minutes.

Golden City upped their intensity in the second half. Lacking control in the centre of the park, they began putting long balls over the top to make use of their pace out wide.

Castlemaine’s defence was outstanding, Charlie Shooter and Otis Wilson worked hard on the outside with backs Arlo Johnston and Dominic Doolan proving an impenetrable wall in the centre.

Late in the second half Dominic Doolan produced an outstanding tackle inside the box just as Golden City’s key ball-handler looked likely to be one-on-one with the keeper. With Billy Weiss producing two great goals, Cohen one, to add to Eli’s best-afield three, Castlemaine eventually ran out 6-0 winners. Given the state of the playing group, and the fact that their last meeting with City ended in a one-all draw, this was a fantastic performance.
