Castlemaine Goldfield’s women’s team were keen to make an impact back in State League 4 after a bye for the first round and did so with a great win over Altona at their home pitch.

Michelle Duffy made a welcome return scoring the first goal after bringing the ball down the left wing. Julie Rudner and Bridget Woods were kept busy up front with lots of missed opportunities and multiple corners, with Bridget finally netting two more before half time.

Lyn West began a scoring flurry after half time with one from a free kick and then running the ball right in to wrong foot the keeper in the box. Sarah McCoombe capped off some great intercepting for her first goal and then Rachel West doggedly charged out of defence, passed three Altona defenders to slam one of her own home in a great individual effort.

Ray West, Womens’ Seniors’ Coach: “Solid start by the ladies today away at Altona… A pleasing 10 goal total and a clean sheet at the other end had smiles on tired faces at the end of the game.”

Audrey Merton defended solidly in her first full game with the women and reliably sent the ball forward for teammates. Kate Forrest and Ruby Huzzey came into their own in the second half, picking off any crosses from the Altona strikers and were well supported in defence by Eve Merton and Edwina Reid both of whom looked fit and played the game out well.

Cat Gaggin only had four touches in goals, but they were all vital in holding Altona to a blank scorecard and her verbal support was excellent. The final result was a 10-0 thrashing with Bridget Woods netting 5, Lyn West 2 and singles from Sarah McCoombe, Michelle Duffy and Rachel West, in a great team effort.
