Castlemaine’s women’s team only just managed to hold Hoppers Crossing scoreless for the first half due to some brilliant defensive work from Kate Forrest and Rachel West and a number of great saves from keeper Cat Gaggin.

In a very physical encounter in hot conditions, both teams were thankful for the half time break. Hoppers Crossing had been unable to convert a number of corners, but eventually a determined run from their midfield put the ball into the net ten minutes in to the second half. Castlemaine rallied with Lyn West and Bridget Woods both having shots that collected the cross bar and Michelle Duffy also peppered the goal mouth. Julie Rudner used her speed to carry the ball into the box, but Hopper’s keeper was a brick wall.

New players Hetty Moysey and Haneko Muller both held their own, relieving Sidney Showell who injured her wrist when a ball was slammed into her. Audrey Butt Merton and Ruby Huzzey combined well to thwart several Hopper’s forwards but eventually they scored twice more to register a 3-0 victory.

Next games – There are no Senior games this coming sunday, with the next matches for both the Men and Women on the 8th of May a double header local derby away to Kyneton.
