The women’s team have come to expect an annual Mother’s Day stoush and this time it was against old rivals, Kyneton. Both teams were sizing each other up having not been opponents for several years and having 15 minutes extra to warm up, as the appointed referee did not arrive. Thankfully Kyneton ref Ron Cole got the game underway in heavy drizzle but on a surprisingly firm Barkly Square.

Castlemaine dominated the first 20 minutes with Rachel West and Edwina Reid controlling the midfield. Hetty Moysey and Bridget Woods combined effectively up front to have a dozen shots on goal, all saved by the agile Kyneton keeper. Eventually Michelle Duffy came off the bench and broke through; carrying a ball down the middle and catching the Rangers keeper flat footed to open the scoring. Castlemaine continued to pressure Kyneton after the opener and after a series of corners from the right, Lyn West curled a ball in from the left and for Michelle to head a great second goal.

Audrey Butt Merton finished the half with a third goal for Castlemaine, bringing the ball down the right wing from full back. The Kyneton keeper, unsighted by her own defenders, let the ball slipped through her legs for the Mainers to register a 3-0 lead at half time.

After the restart the rain continued, the ball got heavier and the surface more treacherous. Kate Forrest held her feet though out and with a couple of timely saves by, Castlemaine keeper, Cat Gaggin, Kyneton never really looked like scoring.

Julie Rudner and Sarah McCoombe had several opportunities in the second half with good turns of speed and ball control. Haneko Mueller worked hard to earn several late corners for Castlemaine and Eve Merton was ever reliable in the difficult conditions. The win sees Castlemaine take third place on the ladder, with a home against Gisborne next week. Kick off 11am, Sunday 15th May
