Report Trudy Woods

The difficulties of mustering a full squad on a holiday long weekend proved no obstacle to Castlemaine Goldfields Women, whom with numbers down, took on Melton Phoenix in Toolern Vale.

The pitch had a great grass cover but was a bit hilly in places so Coach Ray West urged his girls to play one wing, keep possession and play in a block both in attack and defence. Edwina Reid and Kate Forrest kept the plan intact, not letting Melton string any passes together. Eve Merton and Audrey Butt Merton; left and right backs respectively thwarted any winger who threatened to advance the ball down the sideline.

Julie Rudner scored first, following a shot deep into the goal mouth and collecting it on the rebound. Bridget Woods sent a shot passed the keeper only minutes later and then Julie scored a second to have Melton well and truly on the back foot. Lyn West rounded off the first half scoring with a great goal from well outside the box that scooted in under the crossbar, just before the half time whistle.

The second half saw both teams tiring and for Castlemaine it was a case of just hanging in. A second goal to Bridget with only seconds remaining sealed a well earned 5-nil victory. League leaders Spring Hill are the next opponent in a night match at Caroline Springs
